Yggdrasil de wereld-es is de Noors Germaanse levensboom.

De betekenis van de naam Yggdrasil is Yggr, ‘de verschrikkelijke’, verwant aan Uggr, ‘de angstaanjagende’, drasil betekent paard of hengst.

Aan de basis van de stam bij de wortels zijn drie bronnen, de wortel die zich uitstrekt tot de ijswerelden in Niflheim (land der nevelen) daar is de bron Hvergelmir, de bruisende ketel.

De wortel die reikt tot in Jotunheim, wereld van de ijsreuzen, daar is de bron van wijsheid van Mimir.

De wortel die reikt tot in Helheim, daar is de bron van Urd.

De bron van Urd is een zeer heilzame bron, witte zwanen worden er in geboren en zwemmen er in.
